M1 Water as a guest_Resting near the Ahr-River

Since the flash flood in July 2021, rebuilding-work has been going on in the Ahr valley. Many areas along the river have been newly designated as flood zones and may no longer be overbuilt. In the context of an increasing likelihood of natural disasters, the question arises whether architecture itself should not be able to react resiliently in relation to extreme weather events.

At the interface between river, regional road and cycle path, a new guest and rest infrastructure is to be planned on the Ahr. A new infrastructure of arrival and gathering as a replacement for a ruined traditional facility. A place where residents from the surrounding area can meet and celebrate, but also where travelers from further away can find peace and quiet. A place where the proximity of the vineyards and the river becomes an experience. But the danger of flooding remains.

Can the typology of the guesthouse take on a new meaning in the context of natural disasters? Does it require a change in architecture? How does one deal with shelter and exposure? Does the programme adapt to the flood, does the architecture change? Does the facility try to resist the flood with all its might, or does it react 'softly'? These are the questions we are exploring in a cooperation between the Department Bauplan, the Department of Visual Arts and the Institute of Hydraulic Engineering and Water Management.
